We are asking lighting experts around the world, in the “Who Lights Our World” series, some key questions about their job. Here is Andrew Counts based in Ft. Lauderdale.

1. What lighting console do you prefer working with?

Hog 4.

2. What do you always have with you at your console?

A finger hoodie with “GO” made by a good friend for me.

3. Mac or PC?

Mac.

4. What may be surprising that you don’t use?

Macros. I know some people live and die by them but they’re not for me in a programming capacity.

5. Coffee or Tea?

Coffee always.

6. What is your favorite genre of entertainment to work in?

Any kind of live show.

7. What is your favorite color combination and why?

I love working with different saturation’s of oranges with other colors. I feel like you can make orange compliment almost any other color.

8. Who is an lighting designer that you admire and respect?

My mentor Don Pontious. He was always so humble and taught me that it’s ok to ask for help and if you don’t know it, learn it.

9. What are the top 5 skill sets that a Lighting Designer/Technician should have?

Trouble shooting, willingness to learn, humility, quick thinking, hard working.

10. What is the best type of client/boss/director?

Personable. Someone who makes the relationship feel like it’s nothing work and you have fun creating together.

11. Do you prefer a window or aisle seat?

99% of the time aisle. I hate being crammed up against the wall.

11. What advice do you have for those who want to become a lighting designer or a lighting technician?

Be a sponge and never be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions and generally having the want to learn can create bonds and relationships you’ll have forever.
