Show Reel Of The Week: Aerialist – Anne Weissbecker

Annen Weissbecker

Give us your elevator pitch of who you are, what you do and what your skill set is.

My name is Anne Weissbecker. I am an aerialist who grew up and discovered circus in France and graduated from the National Circus School of Montreal. Since then I perform on almost anything that can fly (as right now an aerial bicycle in Kurios from Cirque du Soleil)

What is your ideal role?

Creating a new act, on a new apparatus if possible, was my biggest wish when I left the Beatles LOVE (my first CDS show)… which is what happened when I joined Kurios a few months later. It really is my dream role and this year also marks my 10th anniversary at Cirque du Soleil.

Name your top 5 credits.

1. Supported by Graine de Cirque, our circus school in France, two great friends and I created our own company and a full show when I was 16. Only years later, am I realizing the incredible adventure that it was and how lucky we were to be trusted by so many people.

2. My last show at the Beatles LOVE, after five years and more than 2200 performances. This was the longest contract I had been on at the time and was very emotional for me. I can still feel the energy this day gave me for my career’s next chapter.

3. Graduating from ENC (Ecole Nationale de Cirque de Montreal) with an act on a new apparatus which I created with my coach Pierre Carrier. I learned to love the research, pick the one in 50 trick/image that worked, and how to create an act from scratch, without references or guidelines.

4. Creating a new act on a new apparatus for Cirque du Soleil Kurios: the aerial bicycle. All I had was a bicycle, ropes, carabiners, a mat and… many training hours with Sarah Poole and Germain Guillermot!

5. Becoming an Halloween costume!! A little girl who saw Kurios decided to dress as the telegramist (my character in Kurios)! That she remembered my character months after and picked it as her Halloween costume is one of the best compliments I have received in my life (she probably had a lot of explaining to do!)

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere… listening to music, reading, walking in city streets or nature…

What motivates you to keep performing/creating?

The wish to improve a little each day, the smile on the audience’s faces and realizing that I’m lucky to be living my passion!

What should TheatreArtLife readers know about you?

I was quite afraid of heights and always thought that the trapeze was too high during my kids circus classes. Circus definitively taught me to be more brave and resilient!
