Prop Maker: Extension Of My Childhood

Prop Maker

Editors Note: Translated from French. Original below.

No doubt about it, that’s what I’m made for !!

Totally certain and convinced with each passing day.

It’s obvious, “n’est-ce pas”?

You’ll notice the contented grin on my face as I eagerly approach my studio.

Not a shadow of a doubt, I’m in my place, or I’ve never left I should say.

Because, if I plunge into my childhood memories, I’m still that girl who tinkers and tampers, making models long into the night with “Sister Act” in the background incessantly.

Dinner, fine – but my fingers are still tainted with glue and paint – which I’ll get back to ASAP.

Alone in my room which is decorated with psychedelic arrangements of cut up cans of Coca-Cola.

Solitary and concentrated on the creation of a battery of pots and pans, or the realization of imaginary animals and modelling clay.

At that time, my hero’s name was MacGyver! As if that’s not clear enough!

Always looking for stray pieces of wood to make a cabin.

Always making table decorations for family Christmas.

Always using whatever I could lay my hands on to invent a décor or something of the sort.

Constantly wandering the aisles of decorative accessories. Often dreaming of that elusive Eldorado named Hollywood Studio.

I am still that adolescent, fan of flea markets and second-hand stores.

Absolutely crazy about the Salvation Army, never discouraged to find the rare trinkets and forgotten treasures.

I still hang around in DIY stores looking for bolts, tools or paint cans.

I still frequent theatres and any sort of performance venue.

Just like when my mother used to take me to the Opéra de Marseille to see beautiful ballets.

I think that’s where the “Bug” comes from.

I still stamp my feet on the floor beneath the red velvet covered armchairs, my heart racing as the lights dim.

I still shiver when the oboe gives the “A” because that has always been my favourite moment. I love watching this little guy gesticulate mysteriously as he beats the measure and cues in the various sectors of the orchestra.

I always make stories and scenarios in my head, observing everything in detail to try to keep it all in mind because it can always be useful.

In fact, I did not choose my job, my professional life is merely an extension of my childhood, and I’m merely continuing to have fun.

****
